A tale of two cathedrals – Art Deco at the Cathedral
21 February

On Sunday 19 February at 5pm the Hawke’s Bay Art Deco Weekend service was entitled “A Tale of Two Cathedrals”. At this service, which normally focuses on an aspect of the 1931 earthquake, our own cathedral’s story was told alongside the story of Christchurch Cathedral.
Lieutenant Commander Simon Wells HMNZS Canterbury gave a riveting account of the Veronica story paralleled with the experience of the Canterbury being docked in Lyttleton at the time of the earthquake. The parallels were amazing, right down to the sailors tasked with guarding open bank vaults both times!
Stephen Jacobi recounted the last service at Christchurch Cathedral, the evensong on the Sunday before the earthquake.
Dean Helen and Bishop Murray Mills recounted our own story including the building of the temporary wooden church in just 8 short months.
Music was from the Navy Band, as popular as ever with the congregation of 600.
