On Saturday 18th February a new ecumenical Hospital Chaplain was installed in Whakatane.

In a service held at St George’s and St John’s Anglican-Methodist Church, The Reverend Anne Griffiths was presented to her new community by a very large contingent (a bus load in fact) of her previous parish – the Hamilton East Methodist Parish.

The service which was led by The Reverend Robert Bruere (Superintending Minister & chair of the chaplaincy committee) with the Commissioning led by Ron Malpass (the National Executive Officer for the Interchurch Council for Hospital Chaplaincy Aotearoa New Zealand) and The Rev’d Dr Susan Thompson, the District Superintendent of the Waikato-Waiariki Methodist Synod.

The congregation were treated to several items from the youth of Anne’s previous parish who introduced themselves as a mixture of cultures including Fijians and Tongan’ from Hamilton.

For Anne, with Whakatohea and Ngatiawa whakapapa, coming to Whakatane was about coming back home to reconnect with her whānau.
